Speed Dating

Today we (design and computer science) met and gave a “show and tell” presentation to inform one another on what we have been working on in the last month. The meeting’s agenda was the following:

  • What question are we answering
  • Photos and documentation introduction
  • Presentation of the tent prototype
  • Individual projects from design and computer science
  • Speed dating (matching of design and computer sciencer people)
  • Next Steps

The photos below are the presentation of the design projects.

Gesa and Janina present the tent model

Hendryk presents the “Swarm”

Kathrin presents “Fluffy”

Kathrin presents “Five Senses”

Svenja presents “Brutkammer

Mali presents “Tunnel”

Gesa presents “Motion”

Janina presents “Body Music”

From the technology/computer science side the following projects were presented: headband/mandible muscle sensing, augmented reality, iPod Touch, Arduino > Sound/LED and Chair, Wii Balance Board, 3D Cube with LED’s, Multi-touch monitors, and autonmous robotics. The goal with technology is to use “off-the-shelf” technology to streamline the development project.

Next week we meet to view the progress of each team.

Milestone 01

After Workshop III we decided to meet again to review the progess that the tent is taking as well as summarize what each person’s individual project within the project will be before meeting with the computer science students.

Janina and Judith both created models to further explore, and solidify, the direction we’ll be taking.

We decided to use Judith’s model as the foundation and build further upon it.

Workshop III

It was another full day of sketching and building prototypes for the main structure. Those in attendance were: Prof. Franziska Hübler, Jeremy Abbett, Judith Stryczek, Henryk Vaiza, Helene All, Svenja Keune, Janina Mertz, and Kathrin.

We built upon the work from Workshop II by refining the first two models further…

And then made more sketches.

At the end of the workshop we decided we were far enough along in the process to delegate the further development to two people: Janina and Judith.

Fragestellung/Question

Können wir einen Organismus gestalten, der mit verschiedenen Sinnen des Publikums kommuniziert – so wird der Betrachter zum Gestalter und Teil des Objektes?

Is it possible to design an organism that communicates through different senses, and in such a way, that the viewer becomes the designer as well as part of the object?

Conflict-suits

The “Millefiore Effect” group (Jessica Findley, Margot Jacobs and Ralph Borland) invites people to play at conflict. In their FRONT project, two people wear ceremonial conflict-suits which inflate in response to their shouts and growls.
Each suit has two systems of air sacs, one for aggressive and the other, for defensive response.

Microphones in the suits react to the volume of the wearer’s voice and fans cause the offensive air sacs to inflate, along with the other participant’s defensive sacs.

Wearing the suits is a cathartic experience that helps releases aggression. However, Front’s function is rather disarming - it’s hard to remain serious in such an odd and humorous engagement.
